Who Gives.... East Gwillimbury "Southlake 5 Day Virtual Challenge"

As many of you that know me and my fundraising efforts with the East Gwillimbury Women’s Show, know that Southlake is a cause close to my heart. It is my favourite charity and I will be always grateful for the treatments and care my mom received at the cancer center.  She is a success story and I know first-hand how difficult it is to travel to downtown hospitals with an ill loved one. Our community is so fortunate to have a state-of-the-art hospital and cancer center. September Who gives… East Gwillimbury is about an individual who did amazing things for Southlake when they needed it the most. As well the upcoming Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake.

I would like to tell you about Tim Brochu a East Gwillimbury resident since 2015 and active cyclist for the past 13 years. During the closure he wished he could do more his community and wanted to find a way to help, but most of the volunteering positions had been closed due to Covid. Tim did more than just wish how he sprang into action. With the support of his wife and daughters he combined his love for cycling and was able to raise $11000 for Southlake and Lakeshore hospital!! He rode his bike from Southlake and finished at lakeshore general hospital in Pointe Claire Quebec. As I write this, I’m thinking about how far Quebec is in a car trip, but Tim rode over 600km in total on a bike, Wow!! The money went directly to PPE or emergency needs. Incredible “Thanks So Much Tim” what an incredible give back story. If you see Tim in the community, please take the time to thank him on his fundraising efforts

Southlake annual run was scheduled to take place in April instead of cancelling the event the foundation and volunteers turned the race into a virtual event. The race started in 2002 and was called the Bob Hartwell Challenge a local civic leader and avid runner.  The race was a chipped run/walk event this year the race was reinvented to a 5 day kilometer challenge to see how many kilometres participants can cover. The funds raised at the event will go to the hospital's most urgent needs. Allowing Southlake to continue to offer exceptional care close to home. With the help of the community the hospital serves the goal is to raise $150,000. The Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake 5Km Virtual Challenge is happening September 23rd-27th, 2020. Registration closes Monday September 14th all registrations will receive a race kit with a t-shirt, finisher medal, and access to “My Virtual Mission.
